Why was my car emmitting smoke out of the wheel wells?

I have an old Subaru and after some highway driving it started emmitting a white smoke that was close to unbearable to breathe in. When I finally pulled over, the wheel wells were smoking quite a significant amount. What would you say could be the cause of this and what exactly was this smoke?
