Why were gadgets invented ?

I kinda got this presentation on gadgets.. and i gotta begin with the history/origin of gadgets..
So why and around what year did the gadgets start coming up.. and the basic reason behind their inventions..
This is kinda corny, i know, buh please..

the gadgets start with the simple machine they made them to make life easier
 
I dont know much but gadgets were invented to make certain tasks easier to do. An easy example would be a pocket watch invented in the 16th century(bulky and was worn around the neck)was invented so people could tell the time of day whereever they were.
 
A very early gadget was a sharp stick. Very handy for poking meat or other items on the fire. A contemporary gadget to the sharp stick was the stick with the burn tip, very handy for making black scribbles with.

These were probably invented on Sunday the 23rd of November in the year 346,322 BC in some camp site in East Africa. Why that date? Why not, its as good as any other.
