Why when I send a ringtone message to my LG Voyager it sounds horrible?

and messaging is the only way to get ringtones to the phone. i even recorded my own made sure it sounded crystal clear and then when i send it to the phone it sounds horrible. and other sounds on the phone work just fine so i know its not the speaker
