Will a 12v dc adaptor replace an original 5v DC adaptor?

I bought a media player that came with a UK adaptor, but I need a US one, and the UK adaptor says 5V DC 2amp, although I have some extra adaptors one of which says 12V DC, will it work?
The 12V DC adaptor I have says output 12V DC 500mA, will that work?
