Will Apple replace my defective iPhone 3GS (32GB) battery or send me a new iPhone?

I am under warranty and my battery is definitely defective. My friend told me they will most likely send me a new iPhone rather than replacing the defective battery. Now that Apple has discontinued the 3GS in 32GB does this mean that I might be getting an iPhone 4 or is this just wishful thinking?
