will i need a new passport to travel?

my current passport expires on 1st may 2011. I am going to new york in november this year on the 1st to the 12th. Someone has told me that my passport must have at least 6 months to expiry from date of return (i return 12th november 2010, so 6 months is 12th may 2011 - mine expires 1st may 2011) is this information correct????????? Does this mean i will need to apply for a new passport to go on holiday with as my current one will expire in less than 6 months from my date of return. any help would be grateful, thanks
 
You will need a new passport. US immigration requires you to have at least 6 months on your passport from the date of your intended return (in your case 12th).

No mater when you apply for your new passport, any months you still have on your old passport will be transferred to your new one. e.g. If you renew in January 2011 with 4 months left on your passport, then your new passport will be valid for 16 months.
