Good question, I've actually asked the same question and have the same concern.
Newspapers, aside from the businesses feeling the financial manacles, are extremely HURTING in this economic recession to the point that such media journalism is on the brink of extinction. The NY Times, Chicago Tribune, and SF Chronicle are HUGE examples being threatened by the expansion of internet buzz.
I love newspapers! I enjoy reading them in the morning and when I have time in between breaks and what not. They are not my only source of info, of course, but that is beside the point. Who will be the ones to report and publish the daily stories?? Rely on Internet Bloggers? F**k no!
I don't really know how to describe my sentiments at the moment, but it will be a sure tragedy should newspapers die off. Journalism will surely face challenging times ahead.
What this leads to is books as well. Books and comics will be affected just as equally. You don't believe me? Well, at WonderCon, comic writers were talking about the same thing. I understand that there are Bookstores hoping not to close down. Can you guys imagine Barnes N Nobles or Borders closing stores?
The financial and economic crisis that we have engendered here in the US and globally are so enormous...thanks to the Burning Bush and Co. Our economy has declined approx 8% this quarter alone, and Bush was fabricating that we'd prosper at 3%...
So people, keep supporting the authors and buy their books, and subscribe to your local newspapers...if you can, of course. I couldn't imagine a world without these outlets.
