Will my iPhone 4 accept mics?

If I plug a microphone into the headphone jack on my iPhone 4, will it then use the mic to capture sound?
 
Mics like the Apple ones will... But some don't. It matters on what kind you have.

But most will, I have the iPhone 4 and my old Samsung headphones, with a mic, record and call.

So maybe?:)
