will the internet ever "rot"?

They say all things on earth will eventually perish, except maybe diamonds, but what about the internet? If we continue to keep it up, will it ever die out? And even if we become extinct by something that doesn't destroy the earth, like Pandemic Influenza, would the internet still be intact, just "turned off" in a way?

The answer to this question is absolutely, but not anytime soon. There are many things that might bring the internet to an end, the most likely of which is something new that comes along and replaces it, much as the Postal Service is in a way being replaced by e-mail. If we become extinct or incompetent the internet will no longer exist because there will be nobody there to use it, experience it, or just turn it on...
