My Ford Econoline van has 225 x 75 R16 radial tires now.
I picked up some nice Michelin 225 x 65 R16 tires (used).
I went to get the "new" ones mounted and the tire shop said "no can do" because the old tires are 8 ply but the new ones are 4 ply. They said I'd be getting blowouts all the time.
Now, the back tires I have on the van now DO say "load range D" which I understand is an 8-ply rating. But the front ones don't say "load range D". And they just have 4 plies. Just like the "new" tires.
All the tires, current front, current rear, and the "new" ones all say the SAME thing: Load limit 1050 KG.
So I'm thinking either the shop was shooting B/S to sell me new tires, or there is something about tires I don't understand? Or were they just confused?
All the tires on the van now were sold to me by the same company that I used for the remount job, Les Schwab tire in Washington state.
I know the new ones are a slightly different size but don't think that's going to be a problem -- at least that was the answer I got from YA last time I asked.
PS: The max load limit on the van is 8500 lbs. It weighs about 5400 lbs empty, and is a 3/4 ton, so normally I won't be carrying much more than 6000 lbs with tools aboard, and unless I load up a pallet of concrete mix, don't figure to haul more than 6500 lbs GVW very often.
