I want to wire an accessory power outlet into the bed of my truck. It was originally suggested I use 10 Gage wires with a 30 amp fuse for it. I want to run things like MP3 player, ice chest, lights etc... A co- worker told me that I have to figure out how far I'm running the wires. He says that I need to figure the round trip (battery to outlet and back), and that 10 Gage wires will only be safe for about 20 amps for 15 feet. He suggests using 6 Gage wires from the battery and to add a fuse block in the back of the cab then doing the 10 Gage wire from that fuse block to the outlet. He says this will be much safer and better. I'm not wanting to get real detailed and spend hundreds of dollars on this project, I just want to be able to have some powered stuff while camping or for long trips. What is the best answer? Thanks in advance for any help.
