water is leaking out of vents? We went on vacation and when we came back the vents were all moist with condensation. I just realized that the thermostat was powered off because of the battery dying. When I shine a flashlight through the the vent an I can see drops of water seeping through the wood. Has anyone ever encountered this before? My gut instinct says it is a plumbing issue but I am curious if the thermostat had anything to do with it. Also, in the past two weeks the weather has been significantly colder and even rained for a few days... Maybe a leak in the roof? I am really stretching here but need a resolution. Any help would be greatly appreciated

sometimes if the ac has been off for an extended period,,then turned on,with house warm and humid,,condensation will form on the ducts or supply regesters....it should go away when house cools off with possible exception in the bathroom or basement,,where its more humid all the time.... if you had an ongoing design problem with the system i would think you would have run into this before.......otherwise you probably have a water leak from roof or plumbing that just happened to find a duct to travel on/through......dan

I would say you have a water leak somewhere. If you have never had the problem until now. I read some of the responses and they point towards insulation. I have seen it on the out side of ducts but never inside. I work in Hospitals and had call lights is producing water. I would like to have patent that situation. look for a leak.

I suppose that the duct could have become cold due to the furnace not working allowing moister to condense, the duct is not insulated properly if that is the case, if it is a lot of water it may be a leak elsewhere running down the duct-work. do you by any chance have a forced humidifier on you HVAC system if so that may be the cause. fix the therm and keep a check on it if it persists you'll know to check for leaks.

Generally, moisture developing on the vents and grills is a sign of insufficient ductwork insulation, or insufficient airflow. But I dont think the battery going out on the thermostat caused it.

sounds like you have a water leak or a high moisture problem,
check your crawl space
