ok so it takes place in the future. there are hover cars, really thin and tall buildings to allow for more space, etc. my super hero can persuade people and control their minds, and fly. she cannot, however control the villains mind because due to an accident brain is half robot.
that's i have so far but it has to be sci fi for school. is it? if not what could i add of change to make it sci fi?

How does she control their minds and fly? Is it through technology or magic?

If it's technology (even technology that doesn't exist) then it's sci fi.

If it's magic, then it's fantasy.

Hover cars and mind control?

Yep, that's "sci-fi" alright!

Good luck!... :-D

If the person uses technology to control minds then is deffinatly sci fi.
If it is just like super powers then it is i believe considered fictional.
It appears though that it is sci fi. Though if it is super powers perhaps check out the book the Giver. It is sci fi and it could give you some ideas how to add the not yet invented/ sci fi aspect. I hope i helped :)
