Would you know if you had an STD?

I've only had sex with one guy my whole life and that's my boyfriend. He has had sex with a girl that is a bit sleazy and I've heard that she may have STDs. While this may be a rumor, my boyfriend told me that he has been tested 3 months ago and is negative and he said that the girl said she was safe as well. You can never be so sure though. Basically I want to know if I WOULD KNOW if I had something and if you think I should be tested?
