WXGA screens - are they generic or do you need a specific model for your notebook?

I have a laptop with a broken one - don't know what exactly is broken on it, it appears to have been dropped at some stage.

The screen still lights up, and shows lines and weird colours. It still reacts to movement, though you cant make anything out on it. I wondered if the ribbon cable has been damaged? I do intend to open it up and have a look. The screen still displays through an external source.

My main questions is, could I use, say a Dell 12.1" WXGA screen? I can see why the person sold this laptop as a new screen and battery will cost more than the machine is worth.

I live in the UK and it appears as if Averatec are an American company only selling to America. This laptop has a US keyboard layout. This is a good laptop for its age, but I would like to repair it if possible.

Also, the power socket seems to be loose and the battery will not charge - could this be the a damaged power socket not charging the battery, or a dead battery or both? Again, I have seen exernal battery chargers for this model, but they are only from the US, and would cost around £80.
