Xbox 360 will play divx movies when using a thumbdrive, but nothing else. Why?

When I have a divx movie on my jump drive, the Xbox recognizes and plays it. But if the same file is on a DVD or streaming from WMP 11, my Xbox won't recognize it. What's going on?
