XBox360: playing divx / xvid from my portable drive?

When i try playing avi (divx) files from my hard drive, my XBox gives me an error.
I can't connect my XB360 to the internet, so how can i play these files from my console?
Is there an update i can download and install onto the XBox360?
 
You need to connect your Xbox to the internet and download the latest updates so you can play DivX videos. Downloading elsewhere and installing on the Xbox will be very tedious and near impossible. Perhaps you could take your Xbox to a friends to use the internet? Or use a friends Xbox live account?
