XviD vs. DivX.. what're the differences?

Can anyone tell me what the differences are between XviD and DivX?

Please tell me in simple descriptions cos im not much of a computer geek.

I think they have got to do with .avi files right?

DivX is a movie codec, Xvid is the file format (container) that contains DivX movies

The above statement is not correct! xvid and divx are both codecs. Most commonly packed in avi-container files. divx does more "smoothing" than xvid --> good for grainy source.
