I've a trekking bike with a long cage rear derailleur but i've replaced the casette with road bike casette. Should i also replace the rear derailleur now? What would be the benefit of short cage?

I raced in motocross for about a year. I understand it's basically the same thing in a car, but could I just jump right into a car, do the same thing, and have success?
Of course its not safe to run 170mph on a bike, but is it safe in the sense that if you hit a bump or a piece of gravel its not going to throw you? Are they stable at that speed? How fast is safe? And if you do wreck, will you more than likely just slide or tumble?
