okay i know little about cars.....but in basic terms what will ultimately happen when my differential on my jeep fails. my car gonna explode? not start? will i be driving and spin out and cause a twenty car pile up? i just wanna be prepared :)

just testing my AWD, half my car was in snow and half was on road. when i accelerated. the front wheel spun (that was on road) but the rear wheel did nothing (that was on road) and i wasnt moving. shouldnt AWD vehicles work better than that and have all 4 wheels spin when you're stuck!?
