Neither drive work and the computer wont boot up all the way to the desktop so I can't click on anything. If I get an external DVD -ROM drive can I put the BIOS to boot from USB Drive, will I be able to boot from the DVD in the external Hard drive?

I copied over from VHS some family videos onto a FujiFilm DVD+R, which has a compacity to burn up to 8X. But my HP Pavilion a310n will not read these dvds to play them, when it can play up to 16X. It did play another DVD that was a Panasonic DVD+RW. Any thoughts as to what could be the problem?
