I have August and September to do whatever I wish and I am stuck between these two choices, what do you say?

I am spending Fall 2011 semester studying abroad. The campus is in Rome, Italy. However, all the weekends are long and we aslo get longer breaks for independent traveling. I was wondering if ya'll know any must-see places in Europe? Maybe some places that are more off the beaten track? Thanks:)

My boyfriend is a refugee. He would like to travel to Europe and is applying for his travel document. Does he need to apply for a visa to go to France?
