gearbox

Sometimes i lose 1st and 4th on the automatic gearbox. If i switch the engine off then back on it sorts itself out. Any ideas?

I have a Fiat Abarth Gearbox The original is 4 speed, but this one has an added 5th gear. Is there any way of finding out the gear ratio without taking it apart? It was purchased in Italy from Alquati. Thanks
