I heard some people use Gimp but my iPod doesn't have an app for that so is there anything out there similar enough for free?

I plug it in, and an installation wizard comes up, but I get this message:The Hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary Software. Even though there wasn't a disk or anything that originally came with the ipod. how can i fix this? Also the Ipod is in Ipod recovery...
