I have a Sprint LG Lotus Elite and sometimes when I am texting a letter it changes it to the symbol on that key, how can I fix that? What causes it?

I saved ringtones from a MMS to my SD card and am wondering why I cant use the ringtones as a ringtone. I can listen to the songs, but I wanted to assign it to contacts (all contacts). Any info would help. Thanks
