seeding

I'm using BitTorrent to download something, and it hasn't seeded, even though it has been saying it is seeding for like... three hours now. I'm just curious as to what seeding actually does- and is seeding optional, or required?

Ok I donwloaded a torrent file and when it was done downloading it started trying to seed, Which even though I read about it Im still not sure what it does, But it says 0(580) seeds connected with (x amount) in swarm, and the time. and the eta time wont change so its not connecting to seeders...
