i don't know how to silent a phone call (receiving call) . on my other samsung i'd just click the volume button once and the ring would go to silent. but i don't know how to do it with this one. help please!

Heya, I've recently had the Nokia 5310 bought for me... and love it!!
But, when I hold down the hash key "#" as on my old nokia, it doesn't automatically go onto silent?....
There is a symbol on the # key with a music note crossed out meaning silent- but it doesn't actually do it?...
any help...
How do i make it alert me when i get text messages also? because at the moment it just lights up and thats not very useful to me when its in my bag or pocket.
