£200 budget approx - Smartphone, or Netbook?

Ok i'm going travelling in 3 weeks time. I'm gonna be away for anything up to 12 months, maybe longer. Of course i'll want too keep in touch with people back home, as well as fellow travellers i meet along the way.
So that begs the question do i buy a netbook with wireless internet feature? Or a Smartphone of some description? Problem i have with the a Smartphone would be costs of using it abroad?
Any help, recommendations much appreciated, thanks :)
 
I recommend a netbook all the way.

Smartphones just cant compare to them, in terms of speed, memory and ease of use. The netbook i recommend is the HP mini 110. I have it and i love it.
