got a 1983 BMW 320i 201kmiles i bought 4 days ago and once i start it in the mornings its just fine but then after 1 second their is ticking or clicking it does it in park and in drive but once i shut the car off i get like a dieseling noise but the engine dose not shake but shuts off smoothly with the dieseling noise. its not miss firing it has a smooth idle it doe snot burn oil it still gets great gas millage its not affecting anything its just the clicking or ticking noise. i took it to a shop so they can listen to the engine to diagnose it and they told me the valves need adjusted so im getting that done.

the timing is off.

sure, the valves may need an adjustment (called lifter tick, if that's what you hear) the the diesling after you shut if off is a timing issue. it needs to be timed. it's a quick job, if they charge you more than an hour's rate to do it, they're screwing ya. doesnt even take any parts.

timing.
