I checked my tie rods ball joints and link all of these are tight.. the play in the steering wheel is in the gear box.. is there an adjustment on it i can do with out replaceing the whole damn thing

Older trucks used to have a worm gear adjuster located on top of the gear box .If yours does, only turn it in a quarter turn at a time until you get the slop out but be careful, the worm gear may be plastic which can break and freeze.

There is an adjustment that can be made. On the top of the steering box there is a allen head style bolt that sticks out with a jam nut on it. Loosen the nut and turn the allen bolt a little at a time in either direction till you feel a change, then continue until you think its better. Don't over do it though, you just may end up changing the box anyway.
