Vehicle runs great, but on 4 occasions in the last month, the engine stalled when I came down to an idle while stopped at a light or pulling into my driveway. The vehicle then will not restart unless left for several hours or overnight. The fuel filter is new, the spark plugs are all in reasonable shape, but it could probably use a tune-up. The battery is fine and all the cables are clean and have good connections. There are no burnt fuses. The car starts fine any other time.
We suspect it is a fuel pump problem, but before I spend a ridiculous amount replacing it, it would be nice to get some ides of other things that could be checked.changed that are much cheaper.

well it could be one of the 4 phases: intake, compression, power, exhaust
since its stalling, i suspect its compression

I hate to tell you, but the fuel pump sounds like the problem... I had a ford bronco, that would just stop if the RPM's got too low, but it would start up again after it stalled, I couldn't tell you for sure, but that was the problem with mine, there just wasn't enough fuel getting to the engine, and it choked.
