1993 jeep cherokee sport is stalling in gear?

1993 jeep cherokee sport 4wd, when i start it the engine runs strong, i put my foot on the break and put it in a gear (this is in both 4wd and 2wd) and it still runs with my foot on the break, but as soon as i touch the gas the jeep jerks to a violent stop. what is causing this, my friend who is a mechanic says it might be a clogged transmission filter

sounds like a torque converter beginning to go bad, usually does it in reverse at first, then pretty soon it may start to die as you come up to stop lights or stop signs, if you put it in neutral and it does not do it, this is another indication, but about all you can do is try what your mechanic said, and see if this helps any, especially if the fluid needs to be changed
