1996 jeep cherokee polarity problem on fuel pump?

replaced fuel pump however will not pump fuel unless i switched the two wires connected to pump. will run for short period then stall and wires nd to be switched again. this just goes on and on. appears to be a problem with the polarity in pump or elsewhere
in regards to christopher's reply fuel pump relay in fuse panel under hood would that be what you are referring to in answer

Sounds like a shorted fuel pump relay. Hope this helps. Christopher
