That sounds like a good deal to me, if everything else is in good working order. Look at websites telling you what things to check for when buying a used car. Make sure the a/c works, ensure that there has been no frame damage, stick your finger up the tailpipe and see how black it gets, etc.

But in general that's a good car. I have a 1999 VW Jetta GLS, with 381,000km on it, but it's a diesel and those are a bit sturdier. My experience and that of several people I know is that the important stuff lasts a long time, but the minor or cosmetic stuff breaks or wears out quickly. For instance, I've had the following things break: the glove box door (twice), armrest, door lock sensor, front and rear cupholders, etc. (and not due to abuse - I take very good care of my car). But I'm still on my original engine, transmission, etc. The original clutch lasted until around 2 years ago. Oh, but there's a little $10 plastic clip that connects the cable from the gearshift to the transmission - that's broken twice now. It's a manual, if you hadn't figured that out.

$5000...hmm. Normally I'd say that's a bit high for a car so old. But 19,000 km/year isn't too bad. If it were $3500 I'd say jump on it. $4000, sure. Above that...I guess that's where you bargain. But I'm saying this without checking the Blue Book value - you should do that.
