engine will ned to be replaced? The engine over heated at the gas station and luckily there was mechanic right next door. The gauge was replaced and the Radiator was flushed. A block test was performed and it failed. The mechanic told me that it could be just the head gaskets, but the whole engine could need to be replace.

If it's a 4.0L engine and it did't overheat too extremely you're probably OK. Those inline 6 cyl short blocks are tough. Take it to a competent mechanic who will remove the head and send it to a good machine shop for reconditioning. If there ar no gouges or discolloration in the cyl walls and crosshatch can still be seen you'll probably be just fine.
best of luck!

Get some "Engine Block Sealer" it's a few bucks for it and get a flush kit along with some new antifreeze. Should be no more than $20. If its just the head gaskets this can hold for a few years. Just flush it our really, really good. Follow the directions on all of the stuff you buy. This can all be done in a weekend even if you have no experience.

You can never really tell until you take it apart, it could be the head gasket or the block or both.
