2001 toyota avalon engine problem?

our car has been running for a few years without problems but this year the check oil light came on and we didn't worry too much about it but within 3 days of the light turning on our engine totally crashed and was destroyed for lack of oil

is it usual for a car to tell you the problem moments before it becomes critical? i thought it was only a warning and it's not like we were completely ignoring it

anyway i looked online and found this is a common problem with a 2001 avalon engine so i'm looking looking for a replacement from a different year so my question is which year is best compatible with a 2001 year? i'm going to be installing it myself.
 
Later model years - 03 on up had timing chains in the four cylinder motors instead of belts. Unfortunately the six cylinder motors didn't have chains till 05 when the new V-6 motor came out.
