2002 VW Passat Performance Upgrades?

Hey everyone. I just purchased a 2002 VW Passat 1.8T and I was lookin to make some basic performance upgrades to it. It's stock right now and I have about a $700-$1000 budget. I was hoping to make the upgrades myself too if possible. So basically what should I do first??? (Chipping it, cold air intake?) Thanks for the help.

P.S.- Its an automatic by the way.
