this problem has been going on since i bought the car with 55k on it. the car will hold coolant for a couple days, then all the sudden become totally empty and overheat, causing the heat to come out freezing cold. i then have to pull over, open the radiator cap with a rag, wait 2 minutes for all the air to come out, then start the car in order for the water to fill and the heat to come out warm. there is never any smoke coming out of the exhaust so i do not think its a head gasket. sometimes their will be a huge puddle under the car as soon as i stop when it overheats. i took out the thermostat so that i dont have to fill it with water or coolant every hour driving, it seems to relieve some pressure or something. all the hoses seem fine, and i cannot pinpoint the leak as there are panels everywhere but it appears to be coming from the drivers side of the car. i think it may be the water pump but i do not want to be sinking money into many different things on the car when i cannot figure out where it is. when i do fill it up with water, the engine runs below the C on the thermometer and the heat comes out lukewarm. i always know when it will overheat because it gets cold and the gauge goes to the middle and up, so i pull over and fill it. any help :-/ also, the overflow has been full since i bought the car it never goes down.
i did try putting the thermostat back in, but then when it overheats i have absolutely no warning because the temps gauge runs normal then boom! without the thermostat i can easily tell the change in heat and i just know the car.

a leak will do that. i had the same problem with my civic. when the cooling system has a leak it will suck in air and hondas dont like air in the cooling system and it causes the car to overheat. thats about as simple as i can put it. first things first is you have to find the leak(since you said you can see a puddle under your car after it overheats, then it must be a leak!) and fix the leak. after you do that you need to bleed the cooling system to get all the air out of it. look up how to bleed the cooling system on a honda civic. you cna find out how to do it all over the place.

If your having to fill it almost every time and it leaking on the driver side, my guess would be your water pump, unless u got a crack on the side of ur block which i doubt. So check out the water pump, if its draining out fast mostly like the gasket but if its kind of a small leak you could try some radiator stop leak.
