Is it true oil changes don't need to be every 3000 miles any more? Specifically I have 7800 haven't changed it yet.

Don't believe a word of the hype about long miles between oil changes! EVERY car should have an oil and filter change every 3000-3500 miles. If you can afford it and not many people can, then use an Ultra Premium Synthetic Oil. But being realistic, you'll probably be using a regular 10-30 weight affordable oil. Just be faithful to your regular oil changes.
The new technology cars claim to be unaffected by high mileage between oil changes. It's just a gimic to make you think you're buying a more advanced vehicle. I'll take a 1960's, well made classic muscle car over your 2011 Nissan. I'll bring my 69' Camaro to a Mecum Auction and I'll go home with 6 figures in my pocket. You do the same with your "highly advanced" 2011 Nissan, and you'll be lucky to get a portion of the original purchase price. Question answered.

Well you have went too far! Yes the old days of 3,000 are bygone but you should not go over 5,000 miles without at least changing the filter.

So I would recommend and I do get oil changes every 5,000 miles now.

Look in the owners manual and see what it says, the manufacturer specs will let you know, but driving a lot like that without changing the oil builds sludge in the engine especially in stop and go traffic like in the city, and can ruin an engine in 30 to 50 thousand miles!
