i know a lot about subarus, and a lot about mazdas and so far i think that the legacy and mazda 3 would make great first cars. but ive been hearing about the jetta lately? what do you guys think? please share experiences, facts, or links. if you want to suggest i get a used car and save money, i dont have the choice, my parents think they will break down on me. so please stick with what ive got! thanks!

If that is the case, you either get the car that breaks down the most often so your parents can learn that new cars break down OR get the car that has the best reputation for not breaking and stranding you on the side of the road.

Consumer Reports can give a historical trend for each car above. Besides, the Legacy is an American made car, its made in Illinois. The Jetta is made in mexico or brazil. The Mazda3 is made in Japan.

The jetta is cheap mexican crap.
Get the mazda.

Hey, if they are paying for the new car, go for it. They are 100% wrong but it'st money, not mine.

I would rate them in this order

Mazda3
Subaru Legacy
Jetta

All of these cars are nice cars and all of them will make an excellent choice. The Mazda is just plain right. They got it all right with this car. It looks great, has excellent performance and ..well, it's just all right.

The Subaru is probably the most expensive of the three. Subaru makes a good car and the Legacy would be a great car to own.

The all new Jetta is also a very good car and it is probaly the least expensive of the three. The problem is that the Jetta can go ewither way as far as reliability goes. I don't understand it but some VW owners hate their cars and others just love their car. My 2004 Jetta 1.8T is the most fun small car I've ever driven. I LOVE that car. My daughters Passat is a piece of crap. It's in the shop way too much, thank the lord it's all under warranty.
