Brazil’s Luan, right, celebrates with teammate Neymar after scoring his team’s second goal during a quarterfinal match of the men’s Olympic soccer tournament against Colombia. (AP) On tap today:
Usain Bolt will be racing to triple up again, Team USA basketball is back in action and Ashton Eaton looks to be the best athlete in the world. Day 12 of the Olympics will be handing out a lot of hardware.
Morning slots:
Women’s golf leads off the day at 6:30 a.m. ET on the Golf Channel. The women have not participated in a golf competition at the Olympics since 1900.
On NBCSN at 8 a.m. ET, sprint canoe/kayak will feature some qualifying heats. If that’s too early, there will be some quarterfinal men’s badminton action on the USA Network 9 a.m. ET.
You can keep it on USA at 10 a.m. for men’s basketball between Australia and Lithuania, or you can switch over to NBC for morning coverage of the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase, which will be in the gold medal race. *Also on the track is the start of the men’s decathlon, where American Ashton Eaton will be competing for his second consecutive gold.
If you want to take a break from the track, women’s field hockey is in semifinal action with the Netherlands facing off against a Germany team that knocked the United States out of the competition.
Afternoon slots:
Starting around noon will be team equestrian jumping featuring a USA team that is looking to return to the podium after failing to medal at the 2012 games. *If that doesn’t interest you, the host nation will be looking to advance to the gold medal round in men’s soccer against Honduras. The men’s team will be Brazil’s last hope at a gold medal in soccer after the women fell to Sweden.
Starting at 1 p.m. ET, the U.S. men’s volleyball team will be locked in battle against Poland in live quarterfinal action. The U.S. started slow in group play but comes into the elimination round on a three-match winning streak.
If you have fallen in love with handball, MSNBC will have the sport from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET. *The men’s tournament has reached the elimination*rounds, and trips to the semifinal are on the line.
If you enjoy breakneck speeds, BMX racing starts at 2 p.m. ET on NBCSN. Connor Fields of the United States crashed out at the London games and failed to medal, but will be a contender to win*in Rio.
You can keep on NBCSN to catch Germany and Nigeria battling for a spot in the gold medal game in men’s soccer. If the match is getting out of hand, switch over to NBC where U.S. women’s water polo will be looking to advance to the finals against Hungary. Ending the afternoon will be a return to the gymnastics arena on NBC and NBCSN where Simone Biles will take the floor one last time in the gymnastics gala.
Primetime slots:
The U.S. men’s basketball team leads the primetime slots with its quarterfinal game against Argentina on NBCSN at 5:30 p.m. ET. *The last time the men’s national team lost in the Olympics was against Argentina in 2004. The Americans’ shaky play lately will make the game intriguing the say the least.
NBC’s primetime coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET on the track. First is the women’s long jump where 2015 world champion Tianna Bartoletta and defending gold medalist Brittney Reese will be representing the United States. Tori Bowie will also be representing the United States in the 200-meter sprint final where she is expected to medal.
The men’s decathlon will also reach its conclusion of its first day during primetime coverage. Ashton Eaton may be the third decathlete to win back-to-back golds. Also in action will be Usain Bolt racing in the semifinal of the 200-meter event, and he could win his third straight gold in the event on Thursday.

If you want to step away from track, NBCSN will have live coverage of the bronze medal game of women’s beach volleyball at 9 p.m. ET, where Kerri Walsh Jennings will look to recover from her first Olympic loss ever in the semifinal. *After the game will be Argentina facing off against bitter rival Brazil in men’s volleyball. If you want an intense, emotional game look no further than this rivalry.
Ending the night on NBC will be women’s platform diving and the women’s beach volleyball final between Brazil and Germany. But if you want to walk off the beaten path, team table tennis and taekwondo will be in the gold medal rounds on NBCSN.
