40gb samsung IDE Hdd doesn't work in P3 but in P4 and Higher works great?

when i attach 40gb IDE hardisk to P3 system it halted at bios start up and not continue further but when i attach 4 GB samsung IDE hd it detected and works fine. my 40 GB samsung hd works fine in P4 system .whats the problem please give solution to this..... thank u
