I have a 92 Dodge Spirit. About 1 1/2 weeks ago I was having an occasional problem with very low speed acceleration. When starting from a stop the car would not rev past a certain point no matter how far I would push the accelerator, it would just cough and sputter but not stall. If I let up and wait a second and then try to accelerate it would be fine. This problem has quickly and progressively gotten worse. The coughing and sputtering has started happening across much wider ranges of rpms, I have to accelerate VERY slowly to keep it from sputtering and I am having problems starting it. When it would start it would stay running but with the above mentioned problems. Today the car would start at all.
Additional information.
This car is an automatic and has TBI (Throttle Body Injection) with a single injector over the throttle body. I had a starting problem with this car less than a year ago and I replaced the distributor cap and rotor and the rotor at that time and it solved the problem. Also I looked at the injector and it did not seem to be spraying hardly any fuel (not as much as I remembered seeing last time I looked at it). I realize that this could be a wide range of things such as fuel pump, injector, fuel pressure regulator, and perhaps various sensors. With the symptoms I described I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. This is my only car and I need to get it fixed as soon as possible. All help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
In response to the first answer. This car has throttle body injection. I can remove the cover to the air filter and look down at the throttle body and also see the injector which is right above the throttle body and very easily visible.
