A friend told me that coolant is probably being evaporated by the heating coil and would cost $ 600/ aprox to fix it. Is there any way I can do this repair myself?

The heater inside in your car is broken, or leaked. Because it is in the passanger area. 100%.

you friend is giving sage advice..[good advice] Dash usually has to come apart to do it...you up for that??? only you know the answer

WRONG! the problem is the insalation!! you probably hear wind coming through your doors dont you? Your friend is 100% wrong he doesnt know a thing why would that have anything to do with your windshield fogging up!!

The first thing I would try is RainX inside the windshield. If it keeps doing it you might be in for a new heater core. There is no coil. The car uses fluid from the radiator to heat the car.

I'd do more diagnostics first. Are you losing coolant? If you're not sure, pay a radiator shop to do a pressure test, see if your cooling system is holding pressure. If it is, look for another cause.

Fog on the windshield is caused by moisture inside the car, which can come from many sources. Yes, check the heater coil, but it can also come in on your clothes on a rainy day, or from a window left open, a bad weatherstrip somewhere (the one around the windshield is a pain), or something spilled (possibly even in the trunk). In some cars, moisture can come from the AC condensor, if the drain lines get plugged up. It's winter, but when you run Defrost your AC may still come on. Don't do an all-day job if you're not sure you need to.
