99 vw passat help flashing light?

I have a 99 vw passat and this check light is on but I do not have the manual. I was hoping someone could help me it looks like a rectangular object and has a lightning bolt through it. The light is blinking and when I come to a complete stop the car shakes rapidly and shakes a little while I drive and I am curious what could be wrong with my car because I am a college student on a budget.
 
Without really getting the code from the ecm it sounds like it might have a vacuum leak since it sounds like it only shakes at idle either that or a fuel problem. i would check out all your vacuum lines for cracks or breaks in them. it could be your mass air flow sensor but you don't want to be playing the guessing game so i would highly recommend going to an auto parts store most places will scan your check engine light for free now, that way you can get the actual code and it will give you a better idea what could be wrong. good luck
