A car stereo that i was given had a ripped off antenna jack.?

After getting into what was left of the wire, there was a braided steel mesh over top of a red cord, inside the cord was about 5 strands of copper wire. Does the braided steel mesh need to be continued, as well as the copper? Its not working with just the copper now, unless i did it badly to begin with. Anybody with car audio experience on?
 
Yes the wire on the inside needs to be connected and it cannot, contact anything.The steel mesh is the shielding,which also needs to be connected and protected.
