I am an American who now lives in the Philippines. I grew up in the mid-west and I love Ham Hocks & beans. I can buy dry beans in a plastic bags here , just as in the USA (pinto, Great Northern, Red, Black) But imported beans already cooked in cans are very expensive. The trouble I am having is even when soaking the dry beans overnight it is still taking about 6 to 8 hours of cooking to make them soft and tender the way I like them. I must be spending as much money in cooking gas as I would if I just bought the cooked cans of beans. It is frustrating, considering beans should be one of those cheap comfort food meals.
I guess I could get a pressure cooker but I was hoping someone knows a secret to cooking beans that would speed things up. I get a hankering for beans and have to wait and wait and wait...it sucks... any help is greatly appreciated.
