That sounds like a conspiracy theory more than anything else. It seems far more likely that they're attempting to follow principles they believe in.
I am not against people having abortions, but personally it's not a choice I would take - if it was my choice, and that's just a principle I believe in and would follow.
I don't find it that far fetched that many religious people of different faiths would feel that they're following that same underlying principle. It's not a religious one (though one might believe it was), but I suppose you could describe it as a moral one.
It's just not in me to choose to destroy a potential life that I was part of. On the other hand I'm also pro choice, so I would have a problem with religion that tried to coerce people to be 'pro life' in principle and 'anti choice' or anti abortion. I think there's quite a large group of people that fall into that category, who are 'pro life' in principle but are not anti abortion in practice.
