ac warm air, burning smell from vents?

Ok, so I smelt something burning, and it turned out its from my vents, and the ac was on. hot air was coming threw the ac, so I went to check the utility room and the gas heat was on, even though my thermostat was set on ac and the ac has been running all day???
any idea why this happened
