The St. Louis Cardinals are facing a scary deadline. By February 19th, they either have to sign Albert Pujols or risk losing him in free agency. Pujols, who put that deadline in place, is the best hitter in the game right now and might go down as the best hitter in baseball history. If the Cardinals lose him, it could take years — if not decades — to recover.

Now, according to sources, Pujols is putting even more pressure on the Cardinals by indicating he won’t accept any trade during the season. Because of that, the Cardinals truly face an all or nothing proposition.

Pujols, who just turned 31, is coming off another great season. He hit .312 with 42 homers, 118 RBIs and 115 runs. The native of the Dominican Republic finished second in the National League Most Valuable Player voting. Since breaking into the league in 2001, Pujols has literally never had a season that couldn’t be classified as great.

With about three weeks remaining to sign Pujols, the Cardinals have to be sweating. Do you think St. Louis will be able to sign Pujols in time? Let us know in the comments below.
